If it isn't obvious by now, I'm a TEDster. TEDxHouston 2011 was my fourth TED event, and it was absolutely wonderful. The overall theme even with a board range of talk topics from my perspective was finding oneself. While it is nearly impossible to sum up eight hours of incredible talks into a relatively short blog post, I want to share some interesting points. During the first talk by Kurt Podeszwa, I was already bawling like a baby. "It takes a special person to do what you do," he said. It takes a special person to volunteer to help others. He talked about his experiences helping others, and how he gained more from helping others than the people that he helped. Kurt told of this touching story of how a little boy saved his siblings during an automobile accident. He was severely burned, but his baby brother was saved. And Kurt thanked that little boy for sacrificing himself so that Kurt could now work with his baby brother at Camp for All. Camp for All is for adults and children with special needs and challenging illnesses. He also quoted Walt Disney, "For a hero, strength is measured by their heart," and Ghandi, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." Kurt ended his talk with a saying. "People pay more attention to what you do than what you say. Actions speak louder than words. Go out there and do something." That's right. Just do it.
Did I mention that there was a giant TEDxHouston cupcake display?
And there were lemonade stands run by kids outside. That is pretty darn awesome. Go Lemonade Day! Another really awesome talk at TedXHouston 2011 was by Wade Adams on nanotechnology. He discusses nanotechnology's role in cancer treatment. It is pretty awesome. You should watch it below. Other cool awesome experiences, watching two people play string instruments almost as big as themselves. And lastly, balloons being released at the end. |
